Part I: Eliminate ‘Weight Gainers’

1) Quick Weight Loss Tip: Eliminate Liver Stressors

You need to keep your liver healthy! When your liver is overwhelmed by toxins and lacking in essential nutrients it becomes sluggish and and can’t perform it’s role properly. If you’re liver is sluggish it will have a detrimental affect on your overall health and your weight as it is your main fat-burning machine!

If you’re liver is toxic you may have:

Abdominal bloating; weight gain; high blood pressure; high cholesterol; cellulite; depression; mood swings; fatigue and skin rashes.

Try and eliminate these foods which are the major causes of a toxic liver:

  • Caffeine
  • Trans Fats;
  • Sugar;
  • Alcohol (very limited);
  • Smoking

Eliminate all foods and beverages with the above in and you are giving your liver a good earned rest.

Your liver will now become a big fat-burning machine!

2) Quick Weight Loss Tip: Bad Fats v Good Fats

We are aware that too much fat is harmful, especially if they are ‘bad’ fats. However, some of the ‘good’ fats are essential and will actually help you lose weight (more on this in Part II).

The bad fats you need to cut out are trans fats and saturated fats. Saturated fats are found in animal fats and products made with palm kernel oil, which is a highly saturated fat. These fats are actually harmful as they can raise your cholesterol and increase your risk of heart disease and have no beneficial role in keeping your body healthy and will definitely hinder your weight loss.

If you must consume saturated fat, please try and keep it below 20g for women and 30g for men per day.

Saturated fats can be found in:

  • Egg yolks
  • Fatty meats
  • Butter
  • Palm oil / Kernel oil
  • Margarine, other spreads
  • Full-fat dairy products.

Trans fats are actually more harmful than saturated fats and it’s the trans fats which clog your arteries. These fats also give you high cholesterol and a greater risk of heart disease and diabetes.

Apart from being harmful for health reasons, trans fats also seriously hinder your weight loss, therefore it is recommended that you totally eliminate them from your diet.

Trans fats are found in:

  • Fried food
  • Pastries;
  • Margarine and spreads;
  • Crackers;
  • Biscuits, cakes and all bakery products;
  • Puddings, desserts and ice cream.

3) Quick Weight Loss Tip: Bad Carbs v Good Carbs

Carbohydrate is your main source of energy so it’s important to include carbs in your daily diet. However, there are two different kinds of carbohydrates and you’ll lose weight a lot faster if you eat the right carbohydrates.

  • There are carb-dense foods such as bread, pasta, rice and cereals.

And then there are

  • Fiber-rich carbohydrates with a high water content such as fresh fruit, vegetables and luscious crispy salads.

So you need to fill-up on the fiber-rich carbs as they have a high water content and are full of vitamins and minerals which are very good for you and are excellent at helping you lose weight.

However when you consume carb-dense foods and they digest and break down in your body, they release sugar and give you a rapid rise in blood-sugar. This is why carb-dense foods are prone to give you ‘cravings’ for more sweet foods which contain sugar.

Therefore, it is recommended that you cut out carb-dense foods altogether or at least keep to a very minimum.

What I mean by minimum is that you consume only one portion of carb-dense foods each day. This could be two weetabix cereal, or, a small portion of pasta or two small slices of wholemeal bread, or a cereal bar etc.

4) Quick Weight Loss Tip: Cut Out Salt

We’ve all heard that salt is bad for us, but how can it hinder our weight loss efforts?

First of all, too much salt is one of the biggest factors when it comes to high blood pressure. High blood pressure then leads to other problems such as heart disease and strokes, therefore this tells us straight away to use salt very sparingly.

Now, when it comes to weight loss salt is a hidden weight gaining food. When you consume salt in large quantities your body reacts by producing more water to dilute the salt down. This is the reason we become thirsty when we have too much salt.

Your body then holds onto this extra water, which is more commonly known as ‘water retention. Water retention gives us that puffy, bloated look and you can be carrying as much as an extra ten pounds of weight purely being water!

Therefore, if you cut out salt altogether you will immediately lose up to ten pounds (ish) in weight in the first week purely through the release of water retention. Most foods have salt in them anyway so it is not necessary to add extra salt to food.

If you must have salt use the ‘low’ or ‘sea salt’ version and keep it under 3g a day.

5) Quick Weight Loss Tip: Cut Out Dairy

Yes, cut out dairy, for at least a while.

I can hear you say “But what will I be eating if I have to cut out all these foods?” Don’t worry, all will be revealed in Part II.

There are some carbohydrates in milk and milk-based products and they are actually quite fattening.

So aim to cut out dairy for your first two weeks of your weight loss diet plan and see how you go.

After that, limit your dairy intake to three servings a day. Try and use all ‘low fat’ or ‘fat free’ versions of dairy products (yoghurts for example), and only consume approximately 350ml of skimmed or 250ml of semi-skimmed milk a day.

As for cheese, try to aim for no more than 28g of cheddar, edam etc., and 42g of feta, mozzarella or any reduced fat cheeses.

Don’t worry, you will be getting plenty of calcium from leafy greens such as watercress, kale, parsley, salad greens, broccoli and spinach if you’re following the fiber-rich carb rule.
